Who does what by when?

I’ve been a fan of the Manager Tools podcast for several years. Their practical, no-nonsense advice on management has been an invaluable resource in my career as a manager.

This year Mark and Mike took on the art of project management. In doing so they did something very important – they shifted the focus from process to people. In Mike’s words:

No matter how complex the project, they all boil down to who is responsible for doing something, what they’re responsible for, and when they have to have it done by.

Regardless whether you are a project management newbie or a seasoned veteran – for a few minutes forget about methodology, templates, resource leveling, dependencies , risk analysis etc etc and listen to the Horstman’s Law of Project Management series.

In other words, forget about “Project Management” with capital letters and simply consider the question “Who does what by when?

I agree with this. This podcast is a really refreshing take on project management. It kinda makes the job sound pretty simple… : )

Yes, the guys do make it sound easy… but they do acknowledge there is a lot more to project management than “who does what by when” – but that is the core of it.
